Andrew Yang: Trump ‘sequel’ would be ‘disaster’

WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — Andrew Yang, co-chair of the Forward Party and former Democratic presidential candidate, said he’s supporting long-shot 2024 candidate Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., because a second term for former President Donald Trump would be a “disaster.”

Yang said Wednesday on “The Hill” that he doesn’t think President Joe Biden can defeat Trump again in a head-to-head contest.

“Right now, Joe Biden is on track to lose to Donald Trump,” Yang said. “And it pains me to say that as someone who is no Trump fan and supported Joe in 2020.”

Instead, Yang is supporting Phillips, who has praised Biden in the past but says Democrats need younger voices.

Phillips, 54, is a moderate from the suburbs of Minneapolis. Before Phillips won the seat as a Democrat in 2018, the area had a history of electing Republicans to the U.S. House.

Phillips is one of the wealthiest members of Congress and heir to his stepfather’s Phillips Distilling Company empire, which holds major vodka and schnapps brands.

Phillips’ assets were valued between $20.5 and $70 million in 2022, according to a financial disclosure report he submitted to Congress that was posted by Axios.
