In Rick Tocchet’s press conference after Game 4, he made the following comments about his team:
“There’s times there we have some guys, you know where the puck’s gonna go, you just gotta get there before the other guy, and I think we’re pausing. Some guys are playing pause hockey. And you can’t win if you have five or six passengers.”
Hang on to the phrase “pause hockey” as well as “five or six passengers.” He took it a step further than five or six though, following up by saying: “I mean it’s the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with some guys I don’t know if they thought it was the playoffs. We can’t play with 12 guys.”

The Canucks have taken the fewest shots on goal through 10 post-season games in Stanley Cup Playoff history, sitting at 203, a breath over 20 per game. Add these things up and it’s not hard to see they desperately need to create more offence, and it’s not hard to figure out which players need to give more.

Elias Pettersson has a goal and three assists for four points in 10 playoff games, which sits eighth on the Canucks after he finished the regular season third on the team with well over a point per game. For a guy who averaged 2.5 shots per game this year, his 1.5 in the post-season is a significant disappointment. Big names like Brock Boeser and JT Miller have lived up to their end of the bargain, Elias Lindholm and Dakota Joshua have exceeded their expectations, and so when Tocchet is talking about passengers, both the numbers and the eye test point to the mercurial Swedish centre as someone he’s talking about.
This isn’t to say Pettersson hasn’t done anything good. In Game 4, there’s an obvious commitment to defensive positioning and not taking risks, but that’s the type of behaviour you expect from a defensive-minded bottom-six centre. I see a guy who’s counterpunching rather than punching, reacting rather than acting, thinking rather than playing.
So with Tocchet’s words in mind, let’s look at a few video packages.
The first shows Pettersson tentatively approaching taking contact, yet he still ends up with snow on his jersey. I’ve been covering the Bruins/Panthers series closely, and while Pettersson is never going to be – nor would you want him to be – Sam Bennett, the disparity in mental disposition is staggering.
Because Pettersson isn’t dug in with his knees bent, gentle contact is taking him to the ice. You can exclude the third clip where he gets greased pretty hard, but in most cases there isn’t much going on, yet he goes down. You may want to watch the clips twice to figure out which player Pettersson is, but he starts at centre ice in the first clip, and in the second one he’s behind the net getting boxed out.

He looks shy in an environment that rewards brash.
In these next clips, I was trying to highlight the idea of a “pause,” which may be the exact sort of thing a professional coach would be able to recognize that’s harder for fans to see. I’m hoping you can see it in these clips, but I’m looking for that first step reaction, that “go” before the thinking starts, the instinct to just get moving up-ice and into the fray. On several of these plays No. 40 comes off looking unsure.
In the first clip he’s defending and doesn’t jump on a loose puck. In the second he has the puck in the corner before it pops loose, and instead of pursuing it, he just kinda … “pauses” to see what Edmonton does with it.
The next two are breakouts where Pettersson’s first instinct isn’t to just go get up into the play, and the last two are touches where he wants anything but to make a play with the puck.

The last video is broken up into two parts, but the idea is simple: I see a player stuck on the perimeter, trying to be somewhere he can get the puck without traffic. And he can get it out there, you just can’t do much with it from out there but lob in hope shots.
This doesn’t actually look like bad hockey, as he can create from the outside sometimes. But it’s safe to say this doesn’t create enough in the playoffs. You can see other players fighting for pucks and net front position, but Pettersson’s never really the guy in those battles, he’s standing outside the fire.

There are certain types of players whose game may more naturally lend itself to playoff hockey, maybe someone like the aforementioned Joshua who just happens to be at the net a lot anyway, so he’s comfortable in that traffic. And you don’t want Pettersson to start playing like Joshua, or you’ve lost one of the aces you’re holding in your hand.
What you do want, is for Pettersson to worry way less about defence and being on the right side of puck battles and all the things coaches preach in the playoffs. You want him to play, in the childlike sense of the word, and he doesn’t seem like a guy who’s having much fun.
Were I a coach one of my core offensive tenets would come from my belief that you can’t volunteer to beat yourself: you have to ask the question of the defence.
What I mean by that is, you have to challenge in towards the net when you have the puck and make the defence stop you, even if it seems like they will. You have to jump early on a breakout and see if the defence is alert enough to pull out of the zone with you, even if you think they will. You even have to try and beat some players one-on-one in the offensive zone because teams don’t make many coverage mistakes this time of year so it’s worth trying to create an opening even if you turn a few pucks over. You ask the defence “can you stop me?” and you’ll be surprised when the answer is, a few times a game, “nope.”
This includes shooting the puck. When Tiger Woods was winning damn near every golf tournament he played, players used to beat themselves thinking “I need to go for it here,” or “I need to hit the perfect shot, because he’s not going to miss.” They piled the pressure on themselves, rather than just playing well and seeing if their best was good enough to win. You might lose – most of those golfers might have – but you can’t beat yourself for the other side.
So shoot the puck and ask the question, and when it comes to Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, you may just get a few answers you like.
Right now, the Canucks are doing an excellent job keeping the Oilers’ offence from breaking out, and that’s great. I don’t think they need to change much about their game plan team-wide.
But they do need to free up Pettersson, and that may involve putting him in some different spots, because I haven’t seen many players in a funk like his randomly jumpstart themselves. Tocchet has his hands full now, trying to activate one of their best weapons, who frankly has been struggling since March.
The Canucks have a very legitimate chance in Round 2 versus the Edmonton Oilers. To get through, they’re going to need more than “pause hockey” from Elias Pettersson.
