Adelaide restaurant Cardone’s Glenelg forced to close sighting rising costs

A popular restaurant in the Adelaide beachside suburb of Glenelg is closing its doors.

Cardone’s Glenelg on Jetty Rd announced on Facebook it was forced to close because of rising interest rates and operational costs, and inconsistent trade patterns.

Since the (COVID-19) pandemic, business has been very tough, and we have never completely recovered,” the restaurant said.

“It is incredibly hard to find the words … Cardone’s has been a huge part of the Glenelg landscape for such a long time.”

Regular visitors were saddened by the news, with some calling the restaurant a “mecca of amazing food”.

“We have come every wedding anniversary for well over 10 years and have loved the food and service,” one customer said.

“Thank you for making it a special evening every time we visited, especially the night before our daughter was born, and I was very heavily pregnant,” another person said.

Australian Security and Investment Commission March insolvency statistics for South Australia revealed 60 businesses had appointed an external administrator in the first quarter of 2024, and 241 businesses in the 2023-2024 financial year to date.

Most have been hospitality, or construction businesses.

Cardone’s Glenelg’s management thanked their staff and suppliers who supported them.

“Thank you for going on this journey with us and for making our workplace an enjoyable environment. It has been a privilege to work alongside you all,” management said.

The restaurant’s final day of trade will be Wednesday, March 6.
