(NewsNation) — U.S.-based artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI has banned the creator of a bot that mimics Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., The Washington Post reports.
The 2024 election season is in full swing with the GOP’s New Hampshire primary just days away — the banning of Dean.Bot is one of the first instances of our country’s glimpse into an election cycle involving artificial intelligence.
According to The Post, the bot was created by Matt Krisiloff and Jed Somers, two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who created a super PAC supporting the long-shot candidate. The Post reports the PAC received $1 million from billionaire hedge fund manager and activist Bill Ackman.
According to a recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, most U.S. adults are concerned about the rise of AI and its potential to spread misinformation during elections.
The poll found that nearly 6 in 10 adults (58%) think AI tools — which can micro-target political audiences, mass produce persuasive messages, and generate realistic fake images and videos in seconds — will increase the spread of false and misleading information during next year’s elections.
By comparison, 6% think AI will decrease the spread of misinformation while one-third say it won’t make much of a difference.
Just 30% of American adults have used AI chatbots or image generators and fewer than half (46%) have heard or read at least some about AI tools.
