A Woolworths shopper has been applauded for their unexpected act after they said they found a huge live spider in a bag of bananas.

The customer said they discovered the creepy crawly “going nuts” inside the plastic bag in a Perth store.

In their post on the AustralianSpiders Subreddit group, the shopper asked for help identifying its species.

“Who is this, spotted at Woolies in Hillary’s, WA,” they wrote.

“Found this guy/lady in a bag of bananas. They were going nuts, so it was hard to get a clearer picture. Who is he/she? Bananas for scale.”

Several were quick to identify the spider as a garden orb weaver, which are not dangerous to humans.

“You can breathe easily, it is not a Brazilian wandering spider. This is a garden orb weaver and female,” said one.

Another said: “That is a very far from home garden orb weaver. And likely in need of some R&R if she’s been locked away in that bag all this time.”

But while many shoppers would have avoided a bag of bananas containing a huge live spider, the Reddit user who shared the image had a very different reaction.

Responding to comments, they admitted that they had purchased the bananas to save the spider.

“The bag said it’s from WA, so hopefully it wasn’t in there too long,” they wrote.

“I bought the bag, opened it, and left it by the trees near my car. Waited for it to make its way out and took my bananas, lol.”

The news sparked a warm response from other social media users.

“You’re a good person,” said one.

Another wrote: “Legend.”

Said one more: “OMG, thank you!”

In a statement to 7NEWS.com.au, Woolworths shared its concern for the wayward spider.

“We’re not sure how this one crawled past us!” Woolworths said.

“We take food safety seriously and have passed this on to our suppliers to ensure precautions are taken on farm.”

“We hope our eight-legged friend made it home safely.”

7NEWS.com.au understands this is an isolated incident.
