Woman killed after trying to retrieve item dropped on Sydney train track

A woman has been hit and killed by a train in Sydney, after climbing down on to the tracks to an retrieve an item she had dropped.

The 52-year-old woman was waiting for a train at Punchbowl Train Station on Tuesday afternoon when the item fell out of her hands.

Police said the woman climbed onto the track to retrieve it and was unable to get back onto the platform.

A city-bound train struck the woman, with staff and passengers contacting emergency crews about 3.30pm.

The woman was declared dead a short time later.

The train driver was breath-tested and returned a negative result, according to police, who also confirmed they had spoken with a number of witnesses and had reviewed CCTV as part of their inquiries.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.
