A 51-year-old woman behind the wheel of the car died at the scene, and is yet to be formally identified, NSW Police said.

The uninjured truck driver, a man in his 40s, was taken to Moree District Hospital for mandatory testing.

“Eleven of the 96 cattle died at the scene, with the remaining assessed and treated by veterinarians,” NSW Police said.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours but has since reopened.

Anyone with information of dashcam footage of the incident is urged to contact police.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
