On any given Saturday night, you can find Times Square packed to the brim with excitement, music, and flashing lights; however, last night, a whole new energy appeared as WME kicked off the Tony Awards weekend with a party over at the Times Square Edition. There was a palpable energy as agents, managers, assistants and Broadway stars gathered for one last hopeful hurrah before the winners are finally anointed tonight.
The event started with a small trickle of eager party-goers at 9 P.M. but the night exponentially grew at around 10:45 P.M. as casts took their final curtain calls and wandered down from their respective theaters to have a late-night boogie to music that wasn’t in their nightly musical repertoire.
Broadway stars such as Amy Herzog, Bekah Brunstetter, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Will Butler, David Adjmi, Daniel Aukin, and Ryan Rumery Mingeld mingled and embraced one another as though it was a high school reunion (a high school that specialized in the theater). And let me tell you, there is no party like a party full of performers. The dance floor remained packed and lively till the very end with the DJ playing a music that ranged from 2004 Missy Elliott’s “1, 2 Step” to Beyonce’s “CUFF IT”.
If you paid close enough attention, you could catch someone having an “I made it moment” as they sipped their glass of Champagne and looked out across the New York City skyline. Maybe it was the perfect June weather, or maybe it was the endless flow of cheeky “Broadway Botanical” cocktails, but one thing was for sure—it’s time for the Tonys baby!
