Winona Ryder Pays Homage to Lydia Deetz at Venice

You never forget your first Winona Ryder film. Mine was 1988’s Beetlejuice, where a 17-year-old Ryder played the “strange but unusual” (a quote I desperately identified with as a moody teen in Texas), baby-banged Lydia Deetz. Today, Ryder walked the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival in honor of reprising her iconic role in the film’s 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

“The look is punk rock queen,” shares makeup artist Francelle Daly, who has known Ryder for thirteen years. “There is an ode to Lydia in the look with the purple smoky eye and lived-in liner.” To get the hyper-pigmented look, Daly starts by priming the eyes with Love + Craft + Beauty Eyeshadow Primer. From there, it’s all about layering liners and shadows to get the desired effect (Ryder has on a combination of Motor Gel Line Eye Pencil and dark purple and aubergine shadows).

It should be noted that while the beauty look is a reference to Lydia, this isn’t the Lydia we met in the late ‘80s. Adult Lydia is a mother (played by modern scream queen Jenna Ortega)—and… well, no spoilers here. To carry on that feeling on the red carpet, Ryder paired a fluffy updo with a Chanel skirted tuxedo. “Venice is so glamorous,” Daly says. “We had to go for a full glam moment!”
