A new Wimbledon champion will be crowned as Jasmine Paolini faces Barbora Krejcikova in the women’s final for the Venus Rosewater Dish. Another unpredictable women’s tournament has produced an unexpected final as first-time Wimbledon singles finalists Paolini and Krejcikova meet on Centre Court.
Paolini has been the breakthrough story of the tennis season. The 28-year-old reached the French Open final last month and is the first Italian woman to contest the Wimbledon final, having only previously reached the first round before this year. Krejcikova will come into the final as the narrow favourite as a former French Open winner in 2021. The Czech is also a two-time Wimbledon champion in the doubles.
Both players battled to reach the final, with Paolini beating Donna Vekic in the longest womens’ semi-final in history and Krejcikova knocking out former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Paolini and Krejcikova will be playing for a record £2.7m, and the chance to join the illustrious board of winners as the eighth different women’s champion in the last eight tournaments.
On Friday night, Novak Djokovic was booed by sections of the Centre Court crowd after setting a sensational rematch with Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s final, which will be played on Sunday afternoon. Djokovic pretended to play the violin as a message to his six-year-old daughter but was booed by some fans after his straight-sets win over Lorenzo Musetti.

Wimbledon 2024: Jasmine Paolini 1-2 Barbora Krejcikova*
Paolini is forced to face another break point as Krejcikova continued to push deep strikes into the back of the court. But the Italian is scrappy and she wasn’t going to give up on this. What a hold from Paolini as she finds a serve on game point and Krejcikova pushes the return out of play. A big moment in the match already?

Wimbledon 2024: Jasmine Paolini 0-2 Barbora Krejcikova*
Paolini won’t be phased. She’s come back from behind before, as the Centre Court rally behind her.
Oh but that’s a stunning point. Incredible defence from Krejcikova to take control of a rally that had wonderful angles, finished off with the forehand winner. Krejcikova is pushing for the double break as she moves to 0-30.
But Paolini digs in. Forza, she cries, as the backhand winner goes past Krejcikova. 30-30, Paolini with wonderful aggression behind the forehand strike, as Krejcikova can only hang up a defensive lob.
Krejcikova has started on fire from the baseline, though, with that flat backhand crosscourt. She works her way to deuce as Paolini fires long on the backhand.
And now break point, but Paolini saves with a wonderful drop shot. That took guts. What a game this is turning into already.

Wimbledon 2024: *Jasmine Paolini 0-2 Barbora Krejcikova
Two strong first serves from Krejcikova as the Czech looks to consolidate the break – Paolini can’t keep either return in play. Another big serve from Krejcikova, followed by the forehand winner.
A poor return game from Paolini, but a strong start from Krejcikova. She holds to love.

We start with two long baselines rallies, with Paolini and Krejcikova trading backhand errors. It’s Krejcikova who gets a first window of a chance as Paolini’s forehand goes long.
15-30, Krejcikova finds the baseline and Paolini moves in, but her volley drops out! Break point: Krejcikova goes after the second serve, and flashes the first winner of the match with a forehand crosscourt!

Novak Djokovic is Wimbledon’s villain – but boo him at your peril
In the aftermath of last year’s Wimbledon final, it was tempting to wonder if Novak Djokovic’s defeat to Carlos Alcaraz signalled the start of a change. Bidding for a fifth Wimbledon title in a row, Djokovic was beaten in an epic five-set battle in his first defeat at the Championships since 2017. As he contemplated the end of his dominance at the All England Club, Djokovic was gracious, his praise of the young Alcaraz glowing and genuine. After so many victories, it was a little startling to see such a fierce competitor embracing the rare taste of defeat like an old friend, reflecting an attitude of “win some, lose some” in front of the Centre Court crowd.
But rather than marking the shift towards a more mutually appreciative relationship, the opposite has occurred. On Monday night, as Djokovic sealed victory over Holger Rune in the fourth round, the seven-time champion turned on sections of the Wimbledon crowd for “showing disrespect” – Rune was showered with cries of “Ruuuuuuune!”, which sounded a lot like “Boooooooo!”.
Having played Rune several times previously, Djokovic would have been aware that such a reaction from the crowd towards the Dane was nothing new. Djokovic, though, chose to hear boos. They acted as fuel to increase his level and take a step closer to an eighth title.
