Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova crashed out of Wimbledon after suffering a shock first-round defeat to unseeded Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on her return to Centre Court.
Vondrousova, who appeared to be bothered by a hip injury lingering from her retirement in Berlin, becomes the first Wimbledon champion to lose in the opening round in 30 years after a 6-4 6-2 defeat.
Earlier, Andy Murray withdrew from the singles at Wimbledon and will instead make his farewell from SW19 in the doubles alongside brother Jamie. Murray was scheduled to face Tomas Machac this evening but the two-time champion announced on Tuesday morning that he has withdrawn having not made sufficient recovery following an operation on a spinal cyst 10 days ago.
Elsewhere, day two sees Novak Djokovic take to Centre Court after overcoming an injury of his own as he faces Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic. A mammoth 11 British players will still be in action including Katie Boulter and Jack Draper, the women’s and men’s No 1s, with both seeded for the first time, while world No 1 Iga Swiatek also begins her campaign against former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, in what is a rematch of the 2020 French Open final.

Vit Kopriva 1-6, 2-5 Novak Djokovic*
Credit where it’s due to Vit Kopriva, he’s been hanging in this set. But every one of his service games is an event and eventually the dam bursts as Djokovic finally gets the double break when the Czech finds the net.
The crowd are behind him the underdog, roaring approval for every winner from his racket but it’s hard to see him getting near enough to the Djokovic serve to fashion even a single break-back at the moment. Djokovic a game away from going two sets up

Wimbledon 2024: Marketa Vondrousova reacts to shock exit
Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova after crashing out of Wimbledon in the first round:
“Today I was a bit scared because of my leg, too. But I don’t think that was the reason. I felt the nervous from the start.
“She was also playing a good match. That was kind of tough, too. Overall it was very tough. It’s tough feelings also to go back. I feel like everybody just expects you to win maybe. That’s tough, too.
“I was happy to be back on the Centre Court. Yeah, it just didn’t go as planned today.
“It’s tough to go out defending the title. I was really nervous from the morning and everything.”

Vit Kopriva 1-6, 1-2 Novak Djokovic*
Another hugely length game as Kopriva digs in to try and avoid losing serve but Djokovic eventually forces the error and roars with delight at the break.
Oohs and has from the crowd when Djokovic stretches awkwardly on the baseline to retrieve a ball but he doesn’t seem to suffer any ill-effects on the knee

Vit Kopriva 1-6, 1-0 Novak Djokovic*
So far, so good for Djokovic on Centre and the knee is holding up nicely.

SET! Vit Kopriva 1-6 Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic on cruise control to finish off the first set. The break of serve seems to break Kopriva’s spirit somewhat and Djokovic quickly gets another before sealing the deal to triumph 6-1 in 48 minutes – most of which was that epic fourth game!
There’s little to suggest Kopriva can hang with the 24-time grand slam champion and Djokovic is, so far, showing no ill-effects with the knee.

*Vit Kopriva 1-4 Novak Djokovic
A simple hold of serve consolidates the break for Djokovic and he appears to be cruising to victory in this first set.

Vit Kopriva 1-3 Novak Djokovic*
Djokovic strides into the net on the first point of the game, racing forward with no sense of trepidation about the knee. He then athletically stretches to make an overhead backhand volley to win the point for good measure. These are all positive signs for Novak fans.
Djokovic then battles back from 40-15 to force deuce and outduels Kopriva from the baseline to bring up the first break point of the match. Brilliantly SAVED by a Kopriva drop shot that the Serbian can’t get to but he then caresses a gorgeous forehand down the line for another break point. Again SAVED and a fist pump from the Czech. He forced DJokovice to awkwardly stretch on the baseline and then put away the winner.
Stunning passing shot by Novak, curled down the line for a third break point – that was sublime! Best shot of the match. But he goes wide to see a third SAVED! A fourth break point comes and goes when Djokovic drifts long and a fifth break point is squandered as Kopriva outduels his storied foe in a long rally. This is incredible!
A sixth break point brought up with a cheeky, disguised drop shot and finally Djokovic secures the BREAK OF SERVE! My word – what a game!

WEATHER UPDATE: Play suspended on outside courts
The rain has returned. Play is suspended on all courts other than Centre and No 1, which have the roof.
You feel for Ben Shelton on Court 18. A match which started last night, the American was about to serve for the match at 5-4 in the fifth set against Mattia Bellucci before play was suspended!
