Kate Middleton has been out of the public eye for nearly three months, fueling rampant speculation that her husband, the future King of England, is having an affair.

According to Kensington Palace, the Princess of Wales had “planned abdominal surgery” on Jan. 19 and has been in recovery. She is expected to resume public appearances by Easter, according to officials.

To quell growing concerns about her whereabouts, Middleton shared a photo to social media posing with her children in honour of Mother’s Day in Britain last Sunday.

Eagle eyes noticed that the image was edited in certain spots. She also was not wearing her wedding ring.

The photo was recalled and the princess apologized in a statement hours later.

That sparked various conspiracy theories, including one speculating William is romantically linked to Lady Rose Hanbury, a former model and Marchioness of Cholmondeley – pronounced Chumley.

The rumour received a boost thanks to American talk show host Stephen Colbert, who joked about the alleged affair in his monologue.

“The Kingdom has been all a flutter about the seeming disappearance of Kate Middleton,” Colbert said Tuesday. “Well now, internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband, and the future King of England, William, having an affair.”

Colbert said speculation about the tryst began in 2019.

“According to tabloids back then, when Kate supposedly confronted him about it, he laughed it off, saying there was nothing to it,” Colbert said. “Always a good response when you’re wife accuses you of cheating.”

All jokes aside, many are asking who is Hanbury?

Recommended from Editorial

According to The Standard, she is the second of three children of Timothy Hanbury, a website designer, and Emma Longman, a fashion designer.

Hanbury, who turned 40 on Friday, began dating her husband, David Cholmondeley, in 2006, when he was 45 and she was 22. They married in 2009 and have three children.

The Hanbury family isn’t like the stereotypical aristocratic household. Her father, who comes from brewery wealth, was known to party in his youth.

That flamboyant lifestyle didn’t stop after having children, as the parents would host “wild parties” for their teenage kids.

“Mum turned the basement into a nightclub for us, painting the whole place herself and hanging Moroccan lanterns and suzanis from the walls …,” Hanbury told The Daily Mail in 2022. “It felt a bit like an opium den.”

When not modelling, Hanbury’s 20s were mostly launch parties and charity dinners.

Hanbury made headlines in 2005 when she and her sister posed for a photo with then-prime minister Tony Blair while wearing bikinis in Tuscany, Italy.

More recently, Kate reportedly partied at a 24-hour techno rave hosted by Lady Rose at her Norfolk estate last summer, sipping on spicy margaritas in a private dining area on the festival grounds.
