Police and emergency services were called to the shopping centre in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, about 4pm after reports of a knife man on the loose and multiple people being stabbed.

The conditions of the survivors, including the baby, is unclear.

Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters the assailant was seen on CCTV entering the shopping centre, leaving and then returning about 3.20pm.

He then “engaged” with several people, stabbing them.

Police were called and an officer who happened to be nearby responded.

Members of the public directed her to the attacker on level five and, when he turned to raise the knife at her, she shot him.

Cooke confirmed he was dead.

“I am content that there is no continuing threat,” he said.

“Police, as I have said, have commenced investigations into the matter which will continue through the evening.”

Investigations are so early that Cooke said the identity of the attacker was yet to be ascertained.

“I do not have information in relation to the offender. I do not know at this stage who he is.

“You understand that this is quite raw.

“Inquiries are very new and we are continuing to make attempts to identify the offender in this matter.”

In the hours since the attack began, terrifying footage of a man running through the shopping centre armed with a long knife have emerged.

Shoppers were seen fleeing while others barricaded themselves in stores.
