Vice presidential debate: When will Tim Walz and JD Vance debate?

(NEXSTAR) – Just five weeks before voters head to the polls on Election Day, Republican Sen. JD Vance of Ohio and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota will face off in a vice presidential debate.

When is the VP debate?

NewsNation plans to cover the matchup between the running mates of Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump that is slated for Oct. 1 in New York City. “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell will moderate alongside Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation.”

The network has not yet announced the rules for the debate, but Vance told CNN that his team doesn’t “require much” and just wants “an opportunity to do a real exchange of views.”

Back in August, CBS News posted on X that it had extended an invitation to Vance and Walz, proposing four debate date options: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and Oct. 8.

“See you on October 1, JD,” Walz wrote in response.

Vance also agreed to that date, writing in a post that the “American people deserve as many debates as possible.”

He then challenged Walz to another debate on Sept. 18 that CNN offered to host, though the Minnesota governor did not immediately accept.

Will there be more debates?

It appears unlikely that there will be a second debate between the vice presidential candidates. USA Today reported that Michael Tyler, communications director for the Harris-Walz campaign, said this in a statement: “The debate about debates is over. Donald Trump’s campaign accepted our proposal for three debates — two presidential and a vice-presidential debate.”

Harris and Trump faced off in a fiery presidential debate Tuesday evening. Although Tyler said the Trump campaign has agreed to a second presidential debate, a date or network has not been confirmed.
