Thousands of dollars are up for grabs for Queenslanders, with an energy-saving cashback scheme expanded to include businesses.
The Queensland government scheme now offers thousands of dollars in rebates to encourage energy efficiency to small to medium businesses. It was previously only available to households.
From October 5 the Queensland government advised it will “rebate businesses up to 50 per cent of the cost of installing new energy-efficient equipment”.
“Eligible businesses will be able to claim up to $12,500 cash back,” it said.
This includes cash back on a range of appliances, such as appliances with a 4-star energy rating or higher, energy-efficient lighting systems, commercial refrigerators and freezers.
However businesses must spend a minimum of $8000 (GST exclusive) to receive the minimum rebate of $4000.
“Now businesses can benefit with cheaper, more energy-efficient appliances which helps save on their energy bills into the future,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.
The program now targets Queensland’s more than 450,000 small-to-medium businesses to help them save money on power bills.
“Whether you’re the best butcher or baker on the block, or the only pub in town, this rebate will go a long way to helping local businesses save on running expenses, while helping to protect the environment at the same time,” Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said.
The energy cashback scheme has been open to households since September 2023, as part of the government’s push to ease cost-of-living pressures and reduce emissions.
It includes between $300 and $1000 cash back on energy-efficient appliances including washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, fridges, airconditioners and hot water systems.
Low-income earners on $66,667 or less are able to claim the most cash back.
“Making the switch from 2 to 4 -star appliances could save Queensland households hundreds to thousands of dollars in energy costs each year, and reduce Queensland’s CO2 emissions by thousands of tonnes a year,” the government said when the scheme was launched.
