Unsuspecting shoppers targeted during Mississauga phone thefts: Cops

Police are on the lookout for a suspected pickpocket who’s accused of pinching cellphones from shoppers at department stores across Mississauga.

Peel Regional Police said officers with 11 Division’s criminal investigations bureau is looking into the case and asked the public to help identify a suspect after an incident was reported on Oct. 7, 2023, at a department store in the Winston Churchill Blvd.-Dundas St. W. area.

The suspect walked around the store and pretended to shop for a “short period of time” before lurking near the checkout area. He approached an unsuspecting victim and removed their cellphone from a coat pocket before walking out of the store.

“The victim was unaware that their cellphone had been stolen until they returned to their car in the parking lot,” Peel police said in a news release. “Investigators are confident that the suspect’s motives were to steal cellphones from unsuspecting shoppers.”

The suspect is 5-foot-10, Asian, 30-35 years old and had a stocky build and thin chinstrap facial hair.
