The rideshare company, which says 45% of riders don’t always buckle up, will introduce audio seat belt reminders, effective Tuesday.

“Our message is simple — no matter where you’re seated in the vehicle, you always need to buckle up,” said a statement from Uber. “Whether you are going a few blocks, a few kilometres, or a long-distance trip, your seat belt must be worn at all times.”

Uber says once a rider’s trip has started, a passenger will hear: “Please use your seat belt for your safety.”

At the same time, the rider will receive a push notification on their phone, reminding them to buckle up.

This feature will be enabled on a rider’s first trip and after that, it will be enabled every 10th trip.

Citing Transport Canada statistics, Uber said up to 300 lives would be saved annually if everyone wore seat belts, noting that when worn correctly, they can reduce the chance of death in a collision by 47%.
