Trump says he’ll vote ‘no’ on a Florida abortion measure

(NewsNation) —  Former President Donald Trump says he will vote “no” on a controversial Florida abortion measure on the ballot this November that would allow abortions “before viability,” ending the state`s current six-week abortion ban.

Trump said he has consistently believed that a ban on abortions after six weeks, with exceptions for rape and to protect the life of the mother, was too short a period. But Friday, he clarified his stand that Amendment 4 goes too far.

“I disagreed with that from the early primaries when I heard about it. I disagreed with it,” Trump told Fox News. “I will be voting ‘no.'”

Amendment 4 would change Florida’s state constitution to guarantee the right to an abortion “before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.” “Fetal viability” is generally considered to be around 24 weeks. Sixty percent of Florida voters must vote “yes” to approve the amendment.

Trump has been sending mixed signals on his position in recent weeks. On Thursday, he told NBC, “I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks.”

Abortion opponents, including the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America organization, had been warning Trump to be clear that he opposed this measure.
