Donald Trump’s vice-presidential pick continues to face backlash after a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News resurfaced and went viral last week.

The senator has received negative attention after old clips resurfaced of him calling some Democrats, including Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, “childless cat ladies” and arguing that people with children should have more influence over the future of the country than those without children. The vice president has two stepchildren.

Trump and his new running mate JD Vance held their first joint campaign rally of the 2024 season in Minnesota on Saturday, a state the former president lost to Democrats in both 2020 and 2016. During Trump’s speech in St Cloud, he attacked his new presumptive opponent Kamala Harris, endorsed by Joe Biden after the president announced his decision to step aside last Sunday, and also swiped at a local target: Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a progressive and member of the “Squad” who has been outspoken in her opposition to Maga Republicanism.

The Democratic Party’s sudden unification was on full display across the broadcast and cable news networks on Sunday as the party’s biggest stars lined up to deliver talking points on three issues: the strength of Harris’s resume, the perceived weirdness of Trump and his vice presidential candidate JD Vance, and Joe Biden’s lame-duck agenda item, Supreme Court reform.

Speaking on various news shows Sunday were three of the party’s younger, nationally-prominent members, Maryland Governor Wes More, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also made an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation. Gov Tim Walz, who like Buttigieg has been considered on the list of potential running mates for Harris this fall, appeared on CNN.

Text messages between members of the Beaver County Emergency Service obtained by the New York Times show that some officers noticed Thomas Crooks acting suspiciously ahead of the assassination attempt at the Donald Trump rally.

The newly surfaced messages indicate that officers were watching Crooks’ movements at least 90 minutes before the shooting.

“Someone followed our lead and snuck in and parked by our cars just so you know,” a counter-sniper texted a colleague as he headed out around 4:26 p.m.

“I’m just letting you know because you see me go out with my rifle and put it in my car so he knows you guys are up there sitting to the direct right on a picnic table about 50 yards from the exit,” he wrote of the suspicious person who turned out to be Crooks.

“By the way, there are numerous ways of saying her name, they were explaining to me, ‘you can say Kamala, you can say Kamala’, I said, ‘don’t worry about it. It doesn’t matter what I say. I couldn’t care less if I mispronounce it’,” Trump said on Friday. “Some people think I mispronounce it on purpose, but actually, I’ve heard it said about seven different ways.”
