Trump courts union votes, meets with Teamsters

(NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump is meeting with leadership and members of the Teamsters union, a move that comes less than a week after the United Auto Workers endorsed President Joe Biden.

In the endorsement, UAW President Shawn Fain slammed Trump.

“Donald Trump is a scab,” Fain said. “Donald Trump is a billionaire. And that’s who he represents.”

Biden is also heading to Michigan tomorrow to meet with union workers, while Trump has headed to Washington, D.C. to meet with Teamsters.

He’s hoping their support could help him in critical swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan. Teamsters workers at locations like UPS have major presence in those states, which could make a big difference in the 2024 election.

The UAW has more than 350,000 active members and Trump was also vying for the union’s support when the group was on the picket lines. Both Trump and Biden visited, with Biden meeting with Fain and joining the picket line in September, the first sitting president to do so.

Trump had a rally the following day at a non-union facility, but some former UAW workers were in attendance.

Now, Trump hit back at the UAW, saying Fain doesn’t have a clue and he’s calling on members to get rid of him.

The Teamsters president said they want to hear from all candidates with all parties on what they plan to do for working people, and added workers’ voices must be heard.

Biden, for his part, will head to Detroit on Thursday to meet with union workers, just three and a half weeks before the presidential primary. Biden won the state in 2020 with around 154,000 votes but Trump won it in 2016.
