LILLEY: Job growth in Canada led by increase in public sector workers
Canadian employers added 90,000 jobs in April, according to Statistics Canada’s latest jobs report, marking the largest employment gain in more than a year.
It was a pleasant surprise given only 20,000 new jobs were expected.
But while that all sounds well and good, Brian Lilley took a closer look at the numbers and found that much of Canada’s employment growth was in the public sector.
And even at 90,000 new jobs some months, the economy is not growing fast enough to accommodate the population growth, something StatsCan has been warning about for months.

Friday morning was a wild one at the PGA Championship – and not just because of the golf.
Sadly, the day began with a pedestrian being struck and killed by a charter bus at the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
There was a heavy police presence on the scene, but people were also trying to get to the golf course – one of them being World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Needless to say, Scheffler tried to get around the snarling traffic, but in doing so, he was intercepted by police.
Jon McCarthy has been in Louisville covering the major and reported from the scene, but let’s just say the two-time Masters champion was arrested, released from custody a few hours later and managed to play out his round.

WARMINGTON: Trudeau declares class war, redistributes wealth from rich to others
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is supposed to represent everybody from all walks of life, ages and economic positions.
So, it was a “strange declaration of war” he made during his sales pitch video for his new Capital Gains tax, which he called “fairness for every generation,” but it was really wealth distribution, Joe Warmington reported.
In the ad, Trudeau actually said we are in a time where “the richest are only getting richer” and he thinks “it’s fair to ask those people to pay a little more.”
But the new capital gains tax hits way more than investment bankers or doctors. Average people, who may have a second home, rental property or a cottage are vulnerable. It’s a slippery slope.

Craig Berube or Todd McLellan will put Leafs on notice says ex-NHLer Kelly Chase
Craig Berube and Todd McLellan – those are two of the names on the short list to be the Toronto Maple Leafs next coach and who should be considered frontrunners, one-time Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues forward and broadcaster Kelly Chase told Lance Hornby.
Chase makes a fine case for both, pointing out that they can each make an immediate impact on a Leafs team that has made the playoffs eight straight years but only has pushed past that first-round hurdle once. Yes, please.
