This weekend Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hits cinemas, in a story set before the events of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
In fact, the new movie concludes right where the last one begins, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing a younger version of Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa.
Tom Hardy famously took over Mel Gibson’s role of Max Rockatansky for Fury Road and his incarnation of the character has a cameo in the prequel.
Now it’s no spoiler to say that Furiosa loses her arm at some point in the movie, given she had a mechanical one in Fury Road.
And in the scene right after her limb removal, Furiosa treks through the desert alone, while high up on a cliff edge by his car is Mad Max eating some food.
In the next clip, Furiosa wakes up in the underground slums of Immortan Joe’s Citadel. So it could be interpreted that Max spotted her and drove her there to safety. But that’s just a theory.
Now it was this cameo was Hardy’s Mad Max, but there’s a catch to the Easter egg.
Hardy doesn’t reprise the role of Max in Furiosa, but has been recast just as Theron was. Instead, his part is played by Jacob Tomuri who was the actor’s stunt double on Fury Road. The Kiwi was also Hardy’s stunt double on Legend, The Revenant and Venom.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hits cinemas on May 24, 2024.
