Reflecting on being the subject of Netflix’s The Greatest Roast of All Time, which aired earlier this month, the former NFL quarterback says the some of the jokes affected his three children.

“I liked when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun. I didn’t like the way they affected my kids,” Brady admitted during an appearance on The Pivot Podcast. “It’s the hardest part about…like the bittersweet aspect of when you do something that you think is one way and then all of a sudden you realize I wouldn’t do that again because of the way that it affected actually the people that I care about the most in the world.”

The seven-time Super Bowl champ said that he enjoys hearing people joke about him, but admits he didn’t see how some of the remarks would touch on his personal life, including his 2022 divorce from Gisele Bundchen after 13 years of marriage.

“It makes you in some ways a better parent going through it,” Brady said. “Sometimes you’re naive. You don’t know. When I signed up for that…I love when people are making fun of me. I always said when I was going through the Deflategate stuff that I watched three things on TV: Premiere League soccer, golf and comedy shows. Every time I turned on SportsCenter it was like, are you f—ing kidding me? I just want to laugh. I wanted to do the roast because Jeff Ross became somebody I knew. But you don’t see the full picture all the time.”

The three-time MVP went on to call the Netflix roast “a good lesson for me as a parent.”

“I’m going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it. At the same time, I’m happy everyone who was there had a lot of fun. If we’re not laughing about things, we’re crying. We should have more fun. What do we love? We love laughing in the locker room. Let’s do more of that and love each other and celebrate other people’s success,” he said.

Bundchen was reportedly left “disappointed” by the jokes made about her marriage to Brady during the special.

Last week, a source told PEOPLE that Bundchen, 43, was “deeply disappointed by the disrespectful portrayal of her family on Sunday evening’s roast show.”

“As always, (Bundchen’s) priority is to support her children who were affected by the irresponsible content that was broadcasted,” the insider added.

“This past week, Gisele has been tirelessly dedicated to aiding those in need in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which is grappling with the worst flooding in its history. She was concerned about family affected by the devastating floods, so to hear her life being joked about was very disappointing,” the source continued.

“Gisele gave you an ultimatum. She said you retire or we’re done. When you got a chance to go 8-9 and all it will cost you is your wife and your kids, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” host Kevin Hart said, referring to Brady coming out of a brief retirement in 2022 for one more season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hart then joked about Bundchen’s rumoured relationship with her jiu-jitsu instructor Joaquim Valente.

Hart said that Brady “f—ed” coach Bill Belichick by leaving the New England Patriots for the Bucs. ”You f—ed him good. You did, Tom, you f—ed your coach, but let me tell you something people … that’s what you’ve got to do to maintain your happiness. You sometimes got to f— your coach. You know who else f—ed their coach? Gisele. She f—ed that karate man.”

Hart continued to mock their failed marriage, saying: “I mean Jesus Christ, Tom. One of the smartest quarterbacks ever played a game. How did you not see this coming? Eight f—ing karate classes a day. … Eight karate classes a day and she’s still a white belt. F— Tom. The only bruises she had were on her ass. everybody should have known it.”

Comedian Nikki Glaser — who mocked Brady for breaking up with his then-pregnant girlfriend Bridget Moynahan in December 2006 — also relentlessly teased the former NFL star about his marriage to Bundchen.

“Five-time Super Bowl MVP, most career wins, most career touchdowns. You have seven rings. Well, eight, now that Gisele gave hers back,” Glaser said, referencing his seven Super Bowl titles.

“But sorry, Tom, the only thing dumber than you saying yes to this roast was when you said, ‘Hey, babe, you should try jiu-jitsu.’ That’s gotta suck,” Glaser added, making a NFSW quip about how Brady must struggle knowing that “your ex wife’s new boyfriend can beat your ass” while performing a sex act.

Comedian Jeff Ross also made light of their split.

“Give it up for the lord of the Super Bowl rings, my friend Tom Brady,” he said. “A man who has so many rings, he could melt them down and forge a sword to go on a quest to get Gisele back from that jiu-jitsu teacher.”

Brady good-naturedly laughed through it all, but objected to a joke Ross made about Patriots owner Robert Kraft and massages.

Caught on a hot mic, Brady was heard chastising Ross when he said in his ear “don’t say that s— again.”

In the end, Brady laughed off all the barbs, telling the audience as the show wrapped: “There have been a lot of jokes tonight, but I miss the love of my life … football.”
