Tiny beach box on Mornington Peninsula sells for nearly $1 million

A battle between five people to buy a tiny beach box on the Mornington Peninsula, 100km from Melbourne, was won with a mind-blowing bid of close to $1 million dollars.

The boat shed is one of six along the coveted Blairgowrie coastline, and while locals told 7NEWS they thought the winning $900,000 offer was too much, they added, “some people have money.”

It was a win for the previous owner of the powered 18sqm box, who has had the waterfront estate in his family for six decades.

The sale smashed the $425,000 reserve set for the seaside gem by nearly half-a-million dollars, which is rare for the area, Bell Property Blairgowrie agent Mal McInnes said.

The record-breaking sale for Blairgowrie was a result more commonly seen in the nearby, mansion-dotted town Portsea, he said.

“It’s a beautiful spot, though, it is, but … $1 million, you can buy a house (for that),” one local told 7NEWS.

“It’s an incredible amount of money. More than I would have thought,” another said.

“It’s too expensive in my opinion … but some people have money,” another said.

McInnes told 7NEWS: “We had no expectations that we would get anything like this sort of result, we’re very, very happy.”

“Not quite as happy as the owners.”
