The red carpet is like a crystal ball for fashion, and the 2024 Critics Choice Awards are no exception. While rosettes, metallics, and the color red are clearly going nowhere, a smattering of attendees also seemed particularly interested in mixing and matching the masculine and the feminine.
With infinite room to play on the spectrum, the stars had a field day, combining oft-gendered clothing in compelling new ways. Many chose to toy with suiting, like Sarah Snook, who wore a black suit jacket over a sweeping skirt, accessorizing it all with diamonds. Meanwhile, Bel Powley’s black bowtie added some contrast to her voluminous skirt and flower appliqués. Others kept it more casual: Natasha Lyonne opted for a pair of black suspenders with her sequined fringe maxi skirt, and Jennifer Aniston added a cummerbund with a train to her pants and bustier.
Some of the younger stars on the carpet embraced a punkish twist. Billie Eilish (who wore Thom Browne) layered a sexy black bustier over a more formal white button-down, while Reservation Dogs’ Devery Jacobs layered an oversized tuxedo jacket—sans sleeves—over a floor-length black tulle skirt.
The men on the carpet also delivered. The pearl embellishments on Steven Yeun’s Louis Vuitton jacket brought a sweet touch to his look, while Lenny Kravitz continued to experiment with cutout suiting, and The Bear’s Matty Matheson hopped on the ballet flats trend for himself.
