Sydney Harbour Tunnel closes as car catches on fire

A car has caught fire in a major Sydney tunnel, causing multiple lanes to shut and traffic to build up.

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel is currently closed southbound due to the incident, which began at 12.12pm on Thursday, while the Eastern Distributor is closed in both directions.

Fire and Rescue NSW said crews were working to extinguish the car fire, which is southbound in the Eastern Distributor, approaching the Randwick exit at Woolloomooloo.

Several NSW Ambulance crews are currently at the scene, a spokeswoman told 7NEWS.com.au, adding it is still a “very active scene”.

They are currently assessing at least one patient, believed to be female.

Drivers are being advised to use an alternative route, exercise caution and allow extra travel time.

Diversions are in place via Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Western Distributor.

Motorists already in the tunnel are being urged to follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews.
