‘Suspicious’ blaze destroys sharehouse in Western Sydney suburb of Merrylands

Four men in a Western Sydney sharehouse have woken up to their home ablaze in what police believe was a “suspicious” fire.

The two-storey home on Dan St Merrylands erupted into flames about 12.40am on Tuesday, however the four male residents, aged 23, 26, 52 and 55, awoke and were able to escape.

The 23-year-old suffered a leg injury after jumping from the first-floor window and was taken to Westmead Hospital.

Residents from surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The blaze was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW, but the home suffered significant damage and is now uninhabitable.

A crime scene has been established and the fire is being treated as suspicious, police said.

They are expected to provide further information on Tuesday morning.
