Surry Hills neighbours hose down woman on fire in Sydney apartment

Apartment residents have hosed down a neighbour who was on fire in a suspected arson attack in inner Sydney.

About 3.30am on Sunday, fire crews were called to a unit block on Devonshire St in Surry Hills.

A second-floor unit was alight when firefighters arrived. Crews managed to contain the blaze before it spread to nearby units.

Residents rushed to the unit after smelling smoke, and hosed down their neighbour who was on fire, before calling triple-0.

“There were really horrid screams … like she was burning to death,” a resident told 7NEWS.

“And they were trying to put this woman who was on fire out, and they were trying to rip her clothes off.”

A 41-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were treated by paramedics for serious burns, before they were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in serious but stable conditions.

Another 39-year-old woman was treated for burns to her legs before she was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene was established.

Police said they believe the fire may have been deliberately lit.

Investigations are ongoing.
