St Kilda renew trade interest in Essendon veteran Dylan Shiel

St Kilda have renewed their interest in Essendon midfielder Dylan Shiel despite a failed trade attempt last year, according to 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary.

The Saints made a play for Shiel last year, but pulled out because of concerns around his body after he managed just 12 games due to form and injuries.

The 31-year-old was again out of the side this season, restricted to just a single substitute appearance in the first half of the season.

But he returned two weeks ago and has been among the Bombers’ best in their past two games.

Against Collingwood, he gathered 26 touches and laid eight tackles, while in last week’s loss to Melbourne he had 28 and six tackles.

Shiel has a year to run on his contract at Essendon, but the Bombers have an array of midfielders waiting in the wings, including Ben Hobbs and Elijah Tsatas.

The Saints have struggled this year, particularly in the midfield, and a fit and firing Shiel could make a big difference.

“The Saints have renewed a level of interest in him. They’re just going to wait and see how the year unfolds for Dylan Shiel,” Cleary said on Talking Footy.
