Solingen stabbing attack latest: Boy, 15, detained as manhunt continues after three killed in Germany

Three people killed and eight injured after stabbing attack at festival in Germany

A 15-year-old boy has been detained by German police after three people were killed and several were injured in a mass stabbing at a diversity festival – but the perpetrator is still on the run.

Police believe the teenager spoke with the male attacker moments before the stabbing was carried out last night, and are currently questioning him as they continue to search for the perpetrator.

Last night, a large-scale manhunt was launched for the lone perpetrator, who started attacking people shortly after 9.30pm on Friday as thousands gathered at the central square in Solingen, west Germany, for a festival to mark the city’s 650th anniversary.

Eight people were injured, including four “very seriously”. It is unclear whether the manhunt is ongoing following the arrest, which was reported by Reuters.

“The police are currently conducting a large-scale search for the perpetrator,” police said in a statement on Saturday morning.

They have assembled a large number of forces around Solingen city centre, including special units.

“Both victims and witnesses are currently being questioned,” they added.

The Festival of Diversity began on Friday and was to run until Sunday, with several stages in central streets offering live music, cabaret and acrobatics. Authorities cancelled the remainder of the weekend event.

Perpetrator is still on the run, despite arrest of 15-year-old

Police believe the perpetrator is still at large, with the detained 15-year-old not suspected to be behind the attack.

Two witnesses told police they had heard a conversation between the 15-year-old and the suspected perpetrator about the stabbing shortly before it was carried out.

The witnesses only realised what it was they had heard after the attack.

The teenager was therefore arrested in connection with the stabbings, but is not accused of being the perpetrator – just accused of knowing about it.

The perpetrator, police believe, is still on the run.
