Sofía Vergara is sharing her thoughts after her ex, fellow actor Joe Manganiello, publicly pushed back on her account of what led to their divorce.
Manganiello declared in an interview last month that it was “simply not true” that his marriage to Vergara had ended because he wanted kids and she didn’t — even though that’s what she’d previously told Spanish newspaper El País.
During an interview with Variety posted on Wednesday, Vergara cast doubt on whether those were his actual words. “At the end of the day, you never even know if that’s what he said for real,” she said. “I’ve read a lot of things that I’ve said that I’m like, ‘Huh?’ What am I gonna do, call him? I don’t know if he even said that.”
Vergara and Manganiello wed in 2015 and announced their decision to divorce last year. She shared with El País in January that her marriage to Manganiello, 47, broke up because “my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom.”
The “Griselda” star, 52, already has a son, Manolo, 32.
But Manganiello had a different view of their breakup. The “True Blood” star told Men’s Journal in a profile published in July that Vergara’s version of what led to their divorce is “simply not true.”
“We did try to have a family for the first year and a half. And we had a huge conversation right out of the gate during the first month we dated. I said, ‘If you’re done with kids, then I understand. Just tell me, and I’ll know what this is, and that’s okay,’” he said. “But that wasn’t the case with her. And I swore to her that I would never leave if it didn’t work out. And I didn’t.”
Manganiello later explained to Men’s Journal that he was frustrated since he believed he was being portrayed in the media as having “some sort of midlife crisis” and that he gave his then-wife an ultimatum about having kids.
“That’s never who I was,” he said.
Following their split, Vergara and Manganiello have both been romantically linked to other people.
Manganiello has been dating TV host Caitlin O’Connor since last year and Vergara has been seeing Justin Saliman, an orthopedic surgeon.
Vergara didn’t divulge too much information about her new romance during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, but she said she was enjoying her time with Saliman and “enjoying life.”
“I’m so grateful to the people that are around me,” she said.
