SIU probes death of man shot by police in Scarborough

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died following a police-involved shooting in Scarborough on Monday.

The Special Investigations Unit said Toronto Police received several 911 calls shortly after 3 p.m. about a man threatening motorists and behaving erratically in a roadway outside a medical building in the Warden Ave.-Ellesmere Rd. area.

The SIU said the man brandished a hammer.

The SIU said a police officer fired one shot at the man while another officer Tasered him.

The man was pronounced dead in hospital, the SIU said.

Body-worn camera footage will be collected from the police, the agency added.

Seven investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

Warden Ave. remained closed between Canadian and Ellesmere Rds. as police continued to investigate.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates when police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
