Shoppers call charcoal chicken joint El Jannah ‘legendary’. Here’s why

Andre Estephan grew up cooking with his mum.

They grew veggies in their garden and foraged for plants in the nearby forest.

It was an ideal childhood, but when war broke out in Andre’s home country of Lebanon in the 1970s he escaped to Australia.

But what was Lebanon’s loss was Sydney’s gain because, after years of working as a taxi driver, Andre decided to try his hand at cooking again.

His dream was to bring some of the flavours and tastes of the Middle East to Granville, NSW, where he and his wife Carole opened their first restaurant over 20 years ago.

It took months of trial and error until they finally perfected their recipes, but the combination of five simple ingredients quickly became renowned as the charcoal chicken taste of El Jannah.

People were queueing out the door and, switching his taxi drivers hat to a chef’s one, Andre manned the charcoal and felt like he’d found his place in the world again.
