Team USA sprint star Sha’Carri Richardson is fast on her feet to deal with tears, too. (Watch the video below.)
Richardson, a gold medal favorite in the 100 meters at the Paris Olympics, consoled an overcome Cardi B as the two chatted about their struggles in an undated interview snippet shared by NBC on X Monday.
“I’m really really proud of you, seriously, because you came back stronger than ever with your talent,” the rapper said.
Richardson, who lost her spot in the Tokyo Games in 2021 over a marijuana violation, praised the “Bodak Yellow” singer in return. Then, the Grammy winner warned she felt the waterworks coming on.
“You’re so special,” Cardi B said to the athlete. “You’re really more than just like an athlete. Like, you’re really special.”
The performer’s voice cracked and the tears flowed.
“Oh my god, can we cut?” said Richardson, who closed in for a reassuring hug.
“I’m so glad to meet you,” Cardi said. “I’m so glad to meet you too,” Richardson replied.
Their mutual admiration society could be turbocharged by a victory in the City of Light for Richardson.
She took huge steps in her comeback with a world championship in the 100 last year and a world-season best 10.71 seconds to win the U.S. trials 100 last month.
