Police in Sault Ste. Marie charged a 22-year-old man with animal cruelty following an attack on a dog Thursday morning.

Police were called at 9 a.m. and officers arrived on the scene a short time later.

“911 communicators received a report of someone kicking, punching, and hitting a dog with a skateboard near the intersection of Wellington Street West and Carmen’s Way,” Sault police said in a news release Friday.

“Officers were dispatched to the area and located the suspect, who they identified as the accused. The accused was arrested, and the dog was seized and brought to a local humane society.”

Charges include cruelty to animals and violation of a probation order.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
