Sault new: Thunder Bay police officer charged with assault causing bodily harm

The director of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has charged a Thunder Bay Police officer with a criminal offence in connection with an incident on June 30, 2023.

In a news release Tuesday evening, SIU director Joseph Martino said he had “reasonable grounds” to lay charges in the incident, which left a 30-year-old man with “serious injuries.”

“As a result of the SIU investigation, Const. Marshall Moore is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm,” the SIU said.

Moore will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on Aug. 16 at 9 a.m.

“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” the release said.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates when someone is injured or assaulted when in contact with police.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the director of the SIU must make the results of investigations public.
