Dench has eight Academy Award nominations to her name, along with six BAFTA wins and two Golden Globes.

Some of her best-known roles include her Oscar-winning performance in the 1998 film Shakespeare In Love, a turn as the first female “M”, the head of MI6 in the James Bond franchise, Victoria & Abdul and Nine.

However she has not appeared on-screen since the 2022 Christmas hit Spirited.

The veteran actress was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 2012, which has worsened to a point where she now struggles to see.

The eye disease blurs central vision, causing damage to the macula and is the most common macular disease and cause of blindness in Australia, according to Macular Disease Foundation Australia.

A reporter asked Dench if she had any future plans to act at London’s recent Chelsea Flower Show this month.

“No, no, I can’t even see!” she responded, as per AAP.

Her representative later said there was nothing more to add to this statement.

“Judi has nothing more to add than all she mentioned to the journalist,” they told The Daily Mirror.

Dench previously opened up about the extent of her AMD last year, admitting she “can’t see on a film set anymore”.

“And I can’t see to read. So I can’t see much,” Dench told The Mirror in July 2023.

“It’s difficult for me if I have any length of a part. I haven’t yet found a way.”

“But you just deal with it. I have so many friends who will teach me the script.

“It’s the most terrible shock to the system,” Dench continued.

“Ghastly. It’s terrible to be so dependent on people.”

Dench has said because of her AMD, she could no longer drive a car but she hoped to continue working “as much as I can”.

“I have an irrational fear of boredom.

“That’s why I now have this tattoo that says carpe diem (‘seize the day’). That’s what we should live by.”

Dench remains private about her personal life but has said she feels “lucky” to be supported by her partner David Mills.
