Closer Jordan Romano won’t be returning to the depleted Blue Jays bullpen any time soon.

Romano was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with right elbow inflammation. Following an initial diagnosis of treatment and rest, the Jays took it another step when Romano had an anti-inflammatory injection in his right arm on Sunday.
Manager John Schneider said that the procedure, similar to one Romano had in spring training, will keep him from throwing for three to five days. After that, the team will evaluate the right-hander’s condition and determine how long he will be out of game action.
“(The injection) was a definitely a possibility once we put him on the IL and talking it through with him and the training staff,” Schneider said Monday at the Rogers Centre prior to the first of four games against the reigning AL East champion Baltimore Orioles.

“It’s something he is familiar with obviously so hopefully it kind of speeds the process up.”
With Romano on the injured list and Erik Swanson demoted because of his struggles performance-wise, the Jays are frightfully thin in the bullpen. With both Yimi Garcia and Chad Green in action during Sunday’s 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, it’s definitely not ideal facing the powerhouse Orioles.
The troubles extend to starting pitching with the absence of Alek Manoah to the injured list, also with elbow issues. With his turn in the rotation scheduled for Tuesday, Schneider said the Jays plans are to be determined with Bowden Francis expected to get the bulk of the work.

Meanwhile, Schneider was also asked about the turtle-like progress of free agent signee Joey Votto and it doesn’t sound as if the Toronto native is anywhere near being an option.
“He is in Florida, I believe taking live at-bats and still working on (a) base running program,” Schneider said, adding that there were no imminent plans for game action.
