Revealed: ‘Real reason’ Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen split

The “real reason” behind the divorce of Hollywood comedy stars Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen has been revealed.

The report comes days after the former Home And Away star and the British actor confirmed their split via a joint statement on Instagram.

It also comes after Australian actress Rebel Wilson called Baron Cohen an “a******” and wrote in her memoir she was “scared” to work with him.

Fisher and Baron Cohen confirmed their separation took place in 2023 amid ongoing discussions on where their family would live, The Mail on Sunday reports.

The Australian actress and Borat star are parents to two daughters and one son.

The publication reported rumours surrounding their relationship “began to swirl last year when the couple began house-hunting in London”.

“Baron Cohen who grew up in Hammersmith and is very close to his family, was itching to return to London, while his wife was happier in her native Australia,” it reported.

“The disagreement over where they lived is said to have taken its toll on the pair, who had been together since 2001.”

Through the COVID pandemic, the family had relocated to Australia and had enrolled their children in Sydney schools.

“I feel like I can be myself in Australia,” Fisher told The Australian Women’s Weekly in 2022.

“I love the people. I love the colours and the sights and the taste and the smells. And there’s something about being home which is just … it feels very magical.”

However, by the end of 2022, the family were returning to the US to continue working in Hollywood.

“I’m not just responsible for myself,” Fisher said of the decision to relocate to the US.

“I have four other human beings (in my life) and I need to keep everybody happy … so, sadly, I won’t be staying on here.”

Baron Cohen reportedly pushed for the family to relocate to the UK to be closer to his family.

“The return to the UK came from nowhere,” a friend of the former couple told The Mail on Sunday.

“They had been living away from Britain for a while and they weren’t expected to relocate.

“But things were becoming difficult and, as they say, home is where the heart is. Perhaps Sacha thought that would make things better.

“It didn’t, though — things just crumbled and crumbled.”

Fisher and Baron Cohen issued a joint statement on their Instagram stories.

Over a picture of the pair dressed in white tennis gear, a note read: “After a long tennis match lasting over 20 years, we are finally putting our racquets down. In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage.”

The message went on to say the pair “have always prioritised” privacy, and “have been quietly working through this change”.

“We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy,” the note concluded.

Fisher, who rose to fame on Seven’s Home And Away, wed Cohen in 2010 after a long engagement.

They met at a Sydney party in 2001.

Cohen is the star behind the Borat movies, and also received acclaim for his role in 2020’s Netflix movie The Trial Of The Chicago 7.

Fisher has appeared in several popular films, including Confessions Of A Shopaholic and Wedding Crashers.

Her more recent credits include the TV series Wolf Like Me and 2020’s Blithe Spirit.

The divorce announcement came days after Wilson made unpleasant allegations against Baron Cohen, which Fisher did not publicly defend.

While Wilson originally did not name Baron Cohen, she alleged he “threatened” her to remove the section from her book.

In a fiery Instagram caption, Wilson said: “He is trying to stop the book from coming out. But the book will come out, and you will know the truth.”

Baron Cohen strongly denied the claims.
