Residents evacuated as unit fire breaks out in Bankstown, Western Sydney

Residents have been evacuated from a residential building after a ferocious blaze broke out in Western Sydney.

The fire is believed to have been started by an e-bike battery left on charge about 6.20am on Thursday at the unit block on French Ave, Bankstown.

Some 40 residents have been evacuated from the building as fire crews arrived to fight the flames.

The fire is still active and emergency services remain on scene, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said in an update at 8.35am on Thursday.

One person was treated for burns at the scene before they were taken to Bankstown Hospital.

FRNSW told 7NEWS.com.au the fire is believed to have been sparked by an e-bike battery that was charging on the third level of the building.

“Firefighters entered to find the burnt e-bike, with the building’s fire sprinklers operating to contain and largely extinguish the fire,” FRNSW told 7NEWS.com.au.

The e-bike was plugged in and on charge at the time of the fire.

FRNSW strongly recommends against leaving lithium ion batteries on charge once they have reached capacity.

It also warns people not to charge batteries near exits from buildings, on or near combustible surfaces, or while people are sleeping.

Roads remain closed around the fire, and drivers have been advised to avoid the area.
