The San Diego Padres are in agreement with the Chicago White Sox to acquire right-hander Dylan Cease, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Cease, 28, had previously been in the Chicago Cubs’ system but was traded to the White Sox in 2017.
Cease has played for three seasons in the majors with the White Sox, and had his career-best year in 2022 when he posted a 2.20 ERA and finished off second in Cy Young voting behind Houston Astros’ Justin Verlander.
In 2023, the Milton, Georgia native dealt with some regression and posted a career-worst 4.58 ERA in 177 innings.
Before this trade was agreed upon, it was reported that the New York Yankees were making a play to acquire Cease in light of an injury to Gerrit Cole.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale report that top pitching prospects Drew Thorpe and Jairo Iriarte are headed to Chicago in return.
