Driving tests shift to private centres

From June 1, 2024, individuals can now take driving tests at private driving training centres instead of government RTOs. These centres will be permitted to conduct tests and issue certificates for license eligibility.

Application process
The application process stays unchanged. Applicants can apply online or offline through https://parivahan.gov.in/. The application fee varies based on the license type. Physical visits to the RTO for document submission and driving skill demonstrations are still required for license approval.

Harsher penalties for minors

Speeding fines remain between Rs 1000 and Rs 2000, minors that are caught driving will face a heavy penalty of Rs 25,000 fine. Additionally, their vehicle registration will be canceled, and they’ll be ineligible for a license until 25 years old.

Training duration
Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) require 29 hours over 4 weeks, comprising 8 hours of theory and 21 hours of practical training. Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) need 38 hours over 6 weeks, with 8 hours of theory and 31 hours of practical training.

Land Requirement: Driving training centers must have at least 1 acre of land (2 acres for four-wheeler training). Testing Facility: Schools must provide access to a suitable testing facility. Trainers must possess a high school diploma (or equivalent), a minimum of 5 years of driving experience, and proficiency in biometrics and IT systems.
