Princess Anne suffers memory loss as she recovers in hospital

Princess Anne is recovering well in hospital after suffering a head injury thought to have been caused by a horse, her husband said.

Anne, 73, the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth, suffered minor injuries and a concussion while walking at Gatcombe Park estate in west England on Sunday.

Emergency services attended and provided medical care at the scene before she was transferred to Southmead Hospital in nearby Bristol as a “precautionary measure” for tests, treatment and observation.

However, the princess is understood to have suffered memory loss after sustaining the head injury, meaning the palace has been unable to establish specific details about what occurred.

Her medical team say the wounds are consistent with a potential impact from a horse’s head or legs.

Her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, 69, told reporters during a visit to see the princess at the hospital on Monday: “She’s doing fine – slow but sure.”

In a conversation with a well-wisher, while leaving the hospital, he gave a more detailed update: “She is recovering well, thank you.”

He added: “We are both profoundly grateful to the medical team and hospital support staff for their expert care – and to the emergency services who were all so wonderful at the scene.

“We are both deeply touched by all the kind messages we have received from so many people near and far. It means a great deal.”

The princess is expected to return home this week, but her upcoming engagements have been postponed and she will not fly to Canada as planned at the end of the week.

Anne – who is King Charles’ younger sister and the second of the late Queen Elizabeth’s four children – recently took on more duties in light of Charles’ cancer diagnosis.

She is a keen horse rider and competed in Equestrian events at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.
