Prince Carl Philip of Sweden makes rare admission about lifelong battle

Prince Carl Philip of Sweden made a poignant speech at the Nordic Dyslexia Congress, highlighting his personal connection to the cause.

Standing before the audience, the prince explained: “You might be curious about my presence here today. One reason is that I am dyslexic myself.”

The 45-year-old elaborated on the efforts of the Prince Couple’s Foundation, which he and his wife Princess Sofia have established.

“Our foundation’s goal is to ensure that every child can express their true self,” he said.

“We are dedicated to creating an inclusive society that values and supports each individual’s unique qualities, including those with dyslexia.

“Today, we know that dyslexia can be associated with creativity and strong problem-solving skills. But still, not everyone gets the help they need.

“Too many children depend on their parents being able to advocate these needs.

“A lot has happened in the field of dyslexia since I was a child. Today there are fantastic educational tools. There is more research, deeper knowledge, and better understanding.

“And there are places like this congress to share knowledge and experiences. But we still have a long way to go.

“We all want to contribute to an inclusive society. A society where children with dyslexia are just as included in the education as children without dyslexia. That is one of the reasons why we are all here.”

Addressing the progress in dyslexia research and support, Prince Carl Philip remarked: “While we have seen significant improvements since my childhood, there is still much more work to be done.”

Prince Carl Philip has previously shared his experiences with dyslexia and is not alone among royals in doing so.

The prince is the only son and the second of three children of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

In accordance with the 1979 Act of Succession, which took effect on 1 January 1980, his older sister Crown Princess Victoria is heir to the Swedish throne.

Princess Beatrice of the UK, the granddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth, has also spoken about her own struggles with the condition.

She and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi both are dyslexic and have spoken out about their plans if their children also have the condition.

“As two dyslexics, we will be figuring out as parents whether or not our children have dyslexia and how best to support them,” Princess Beatrice told Lessons in Dyslexic Thinking in 2023.

“But I think the most important thing that I can do, hopefully, if they are lucky enough to be dyslexic as well, then I feel really grateful that we can help them with resources.”

“Being a part of this community I think has given me a bit more of an understanding and I’d really like that for all parents.

“So actually bringing the parents into the conversation I think is really exciting because when a parent does happen to have the news that their child is dyslexic, right now, I don’t think they’re getting the right support.”

Princess Beatrice and Mozzi have a two-year-old daughter Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi and Beatrice is stepmother to eight-year-old Christopher “Wolfie” Woolf.
