Police shoot at vehicle as it drives ‘directly at a constable’ in St Peters car park, in Sydney’s inner west

A police officer opened fire at a Volkswagen Golf as it hurtled directly at them after responding to reports of a break-and-enter in Sydney’s inner west early Sunday.

Officers had been called to a break-in at a unit block on the Princes Hwy at St Peters about 1.15am.

They found two men in an underground car park, and when confronted the pair got into “a white Volkswagen Golf and began to drive off,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“When police attempted to stop the car, the vehicle drove directly at a constable,” the statement added. “The officer drew their weapon and a single shot was fired at the vehicle before it fled the scene.”

Later, at 2am, the car was found on fire in an underground car park on Harris St, Pyrmont.

“Police have identified the damaged vehicle is the same vehicle from the earlier incident,” police said.

The car is now undergoing forensic examination.
