Pitbull purchasing naming rights to FIU football stadium: Reports

(NewsNation) — Legendary Florida rapper and singer Pitbull is buying the naming rights to Florida International University’s football stadium.

Multiple outlets reported the deal Tuesday, with the only hurdle to clear being a vote by FIU’s Board of Trustees. According to ESPN, it is thought to be “a formality.”

The 20,000-person capacity stadium in Miami will be called “Pitbull Stadium.” In addition to the naming rights, Pitbull will be able to use the stadium 10 days annually as part of the $6 million, five-year accord.

According to documents shared by Sports Business Journal’s Ben Portnoy, Pitbull will appear at one fundraising event for FIU each year, post on social media about FIU 12 times annually and his vodka company, Voli 305 Vodka, will be the preferred brand used in the stadium.

Pitbull will also create an anthem to be used by FIU, and two suites will be reserved for the Latin recording artist. “Mr. 305” has the option to renew the deal for the same term and money (five years for $6 million).

It is the first football stadium to be named after a recording artist in the history of college sports. The first game at Pitbull Stadium will be FIU vs. Central Michigan on Sept. 7.
