Pat, who had always loved music and performed in school musicals, married her childhood love Dennis Benatar in 1972 and worked as a bank teller.
After attending a Liza Minnelli concert, Pat was inspired to chase her own music dreams.
She moved to New York and began performing at the Manhattan comedy club, Catch A Rising Star. Pat and Dennis divorced in 1979, the same year she released her debut album.
She quickly followed up with a second album a year later, which won her a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Pat started collaborating with her current husband Neil in 1979, and they’ve been a team ever since.
Pat has been called the “Romeo and Juliet of rock and roll.” In her 2010 memoir, she talks about fighting with her record company and how fame affected her private life.
She writes in her popular book: “For every day since I was old enough to think, I’ve considered myself a feminist …
“It’s empowering to watch and to know that, perhaps in some way, I made the hard path [women] have to walk just a little bit easier.” Pat is still rocking stages; she sang with Pink last year and went on tour with Neil.
