As Daniel Kwan, one half of the directing duo known as The Daniels, walked to the stage to accept the award for Best Director for Everything Everywhere All At Once, he showed a special message on his jacket; a PUNK appliqué on big yellow letters. The jacket paid homage to a cardigan also emblazoned with the word PUNK on the front and back, worn by Michelle Yeoh’s character Evelyn Wong in a pivotal scene in the movie.
“It came in a scene where she smashes the window,” Shirley Kurata, the film’s costume designer explained, “and it exemplified what she was going through and who she really was. She was becoming badass and punk at that point.”
The cardigan has already become a touchstone for fans throughout the world; there are reproductions available on Etsy, and the original piece recently sold at auction for 15,000. The proceeds benefitted The Transgender Law Center.
