A night later in Ottawa, a PWHL game at The Arena at TD Place between visiting Montreal and Ottawa set a record for attendance at a women’s professional hockey game as 8,318 came through the doors to witness the second game played in league history.
Saturday’s game featuring host Minnesota and visiting Montreal at Xcel Energy Centre in St. Paul, Minn., is threatening to break that record again with ticket sales at the 18,000-plus arena already looking like they will surpass the Ottawa mark.
“The enthusiastic response to our historic opening game reflects Canada’s national interest in our sport, our outstanding athletes and the PWHL,” Stan Kasten, PWHL Advisory Board member said in a statement released by the league. “We truly hear the statement our viewing audience made Monday, and we cherish the level of engagement shown. We will work even more intently with our broadcast partners to build the PWHL community through the quality productions and storytelling our great fans deserve.”
