On the Podcast: Nicolas Ghesquière’s Aesthetic Danger

Nicolas Ghesquière has one wish for his spring 2025 show: that the collection serves as an “expression of a renaissance.” A decade into his tenure as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton, Ghesquière tells Nicole Phelps that he is writing a new chapter for the house that will chart a path through history—and into a sustainable future.

As he explains on this week’s episode of The Run-Through, Ghesquière first fell in love with fashion at 14, when he would comb through his local library on the outskirts of Paris for magazines and watch Azzedine Alaïa, Thierry Mugler, and Jean Paul Gaultier on TV. He’d go on to work for Gaultier when he was 18, and later at Balenciaga for 15 years. Following his appointment at Vuitton in 2013, he says, “I did reveal what was going to [be] the new vocabulary for LV.” Ghesquière’s first show was filled with sharp silhouettes and refined new fabrics that would become a signature. “Everything that we know that the beautiful values of fashion can bring about…evolution, acceptance, love of others…everything was already there, except the scale was smaller than today,” he adds.
